My name is Michael Batease and I've spent the past 30+ years pursuing elk in multiple different states on public land.  

I've been right where you are and know first hand that learning to use an elk call is hard and it takes time when trying to figure it out on your own. When I first started trying to use a diaphragm reed I was horrible! I thought they were the dumbest thing in the world. There really weren't any videos showing you how to use one, and you only had the back of packaging to give any direction on how to use one and that usually left you even more confused than before you read the instructions. After struggling for a couple of years, I was finally able to use a diaphragm reed to some extent. I still wasn’t very good, and I could only do a couple of elk sounds, but I was able to use one none the least.  I remember on a few of those early hunts hearing a bull bugle and attempting to mimic what he was doing. It didn’t go very well! 

I finally became proficient with a diaphragm reed and started to see even more success on my elk hunts, and up on stage in competitions. Once you become good with elk calls it is so much fun calling back and forth with bulls screaming during September . I've been hunting elk since 1989 and I still get a huge smile every year when I'm out there engaging with a bull during one of my calling sequences. To me, there is nothing better than hearing a bull answer my call when the first light of day is cracking over the horizon.

Once you understand the fundamental skills of using a diaphragm reed, you can use any diaphragm reed elk call on the market. It does take some time if you are trying to go it alone, but that time line can be reduced dramatically if you have the right coaching.
